ITANAGAR, Apr 22: Much to the joy of animal lovers and environmentalists, the D Ering Wildlife Sanctuary wardens spotted a herd of elephant numbering around 60 including their cubs in the sanctuary last evening, according to DFO Tashi Mize.

The arrival of elephants is presumed to be a good sign as their presence in the sanctuary would certainly be a bane for the poachers and smugglers who are usually device new trick to escape from hawk-eyed forest guards. Unfortunately the elephants don’t stay here for long time due to low availability of fodders like wild bananas. Now sanctuary officials are of the view that planting of abundant wild banana tress will provide adequate fodder to the elephants and help them stay in the sanctuary permanently.  However, deputy range officer of Borguli forest range Naning Perme is of the view that aerial dropping of wild banana seeds across the sanctuary would be an ideal option.

Press bodies react to CM’s statement

ITANAGAR, Apr 22: Arunachal Pradesh Union of Working Journalist (APUWJ) and Arunachal Press Club (APC) have expressed dismay over statement of Chief Minister Nabam Tuki wherein he said that “if the local media do not cooperate with Government of Arunachal and boycott its news from April 24, it would be reciprocal”.

In an emergency meeting held here in the office of Arunachal Press Club today, the members of APUWJ and APC sought an explanation from the CM on his statement. They wondered whether CM is threatening to stop government advertisements to those media houses which boycott Govt news from April 24 onwards.

They further doubted if Tuki is the same person who had promised to work for the growth of the media in the state when he took over the reins of the state.

Addressing the presspersons at Rajiv Gandhi Bhawan two days ago, Tuki raised eyebrows with his controversial statement that “Arunachal Times (AT) Staffs instead of remaining mute spectators could have got hold of one of the miscreants who attacked the office of the daily.” APC and APWUJ stated that such kind of statement from the man holding the post of Chief Minister is very distressing to hear. Further objecting to the irresponsible statement of CM, the organizations said, “During the time of attack only 4 office members were present inside AT office. Around 8 masked youth had entered the office premises and dozens more were waiting outside. Most probably some of the youths might have been armed. In such a situation how can CM expect staff of AT to catch hold of the attackers? What if any staffs were physically injured, will the state government bear loss of life? No one wants to get gold medal posthumously,” APC and APUWJ said in a joint statement.

The media fraternity of state has always been cooperating with police and concern authorities right from assault on the associate editor of Dawn-Lit Post, attack on office of Arunachal Front and also assault on journalists Appu Gapak and Nyapi Bomjen. Did anything happen? Cases are still pending at courts and attackers roaming around freely. In the particular case of attack on AT, the staff and management of this daily has been cooperating with capital police and had provided all the necessary informations for further action.

“There is no point in dwelling what Arunachal Times staff could have done at the time of attack. Instead, CM Tuki should be advising his police force to work towards solving this case at the earliest”, the two organizations added. With all the evidences provided to the capital police 10 days is more than sufficient to trace out the attackers. Further the two organizations reiterated their demand for providing security to all the media houses of capital.

It also appealed to the Press fraternity to change their decision to boycott any Press statements by government and all non-governmental organizations, including the student community from April 24 next.

“Keeping in mind the seriousness of the matter, APYC president Tadar Niglar who spoke to the Capital SP was informed that day to day rigorous investigation is being carried out to solve the case. The SP expressed confidence that the case would be solved in no time”.

Niglar also said that the maintaining law and order situation in the state is not only the state government’s responsibility but of every individual and organization.

An open letter to Govt

Dear Editor,

It is inspiring to hear the speeches of ministers, parliamentary secretaries, MLAs and officers during public meeting and seminar etc. when they speak about self-employment schemes and Govt’s plan to generate employment opportunities in agriculture, horticulture, Tea, Rubber, Poultry, Piggery, Diary and many others  sectors. But, they should know about the capabilities of the Govt in providing technical guidance to the prospective farmers and upcoming entrepreneurs before announcing such schemes and projects. Farmers of other states like Assam, Punjab, and Haryana are equipped with modern agriculture equipments like tractor, water pumps and proper irrigation facilities while only seeds and manure are the things that have been provided to the farmers in our state. Here too, the process of distributing seeds and manure is politicized and not all farmers are lucky to reap the fruits of such schemes.

It is a shame for us that large numbers of jobless youth are still deprived of vocational and technical training facilities. Recently, I came to know that there is no any equipment or facilities for soil testing at Regional Research laboratory unit, G-sector Naharlagun. As a result large number of farmers are forced to  approach RRL Jorhat  in Assam which is not possible for every poor but interested farmers.

Due to improper implementation of policy and program of the Govt, the people of the state are still unable to reap the benefit of Govt schemes.  The state is lagging far behind in all kind of development such as employment generation, proper road connectivity, proper telecommunication facilities  in interior areas due to poor implementation of the projects and schemes.

Many high profile dignitaries are found narrating their visit to foreign counties, but  they never try to share their idea and experiences gained in foreign countries  for the benefit of  own people in the state. Govt sponsored foreign trips of the dignitaries are not at all helpful  for the common masses. It is only wastage of public money on forieng tour.

Hence, through this article I would like to request the state govt. to establish more and more technological institutes in the state so that unemployed youths and farmers enhance their technical skill and launch self employment venture.

Yours,

Nabam Akin Hina, Chairman,

Education and Cultural Development Society,

Kimin.

We want him out

Dear Editor,

I don't understand the stand of the present government regarding the transfer of present controversial Deputy Commissioner of West Siang district. His tenure in Arunachal has already been completed but he is still in the chair. During his tenure we have seen many ups and downs and his failure in everything. He has almost lost confidence of the people of West Siang. Presently his act pertaining to Malini Mela incident is also questionable and his continuation as Deputy Commissioner of Aalo is a great threat.

So may I request the present government led by Nabam Tuki to release him before another turmoil happens in the district.

Yours’

Geli Ete, Aalo

Food subsidy initiative for hunger-free Afghan

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) announced a new food subsidy initiative towards providing Afghanistan’s urban poor with guaranteed access to provisions despite the threat of food insecurity.

The project is designed to assist households in Kabul through a monthly cash voucher programme aimed at offsetting the impact high food prices have on the poor.

It is worth mentioning that this project was launched after the successful implementation of similar programmes in other Afghan cities earlier.

According to WFP, some 18,000 households – or an estimated 114,000 individuals – consisting mainly of poor women and households headed by people with disabilities will benefit from the project.

Each monthly voucher is worth $25 and can be exchanged for food items in participating local shops.

While most of WFP’s work has traditionally focused on food-insecure rural areas of Afghanistan, the new voucher project will function as a safety net for those urban poor who are particularly vulnerable to high food prices.

There is a good news that many NGOs of international repute which are organizing poverty alleviation programmes in  the world. One of  such organizations is ‘Opportunity International’ which  provides financial products and strategies to over 2.5 million people working their way out of poverty in the developing world.
